Read a Poet / Write a Poem
(Conferences / Seminars / Lectures) Monday, Jan. 14: Join the RCAH Center for poetry's interim director Cindy Hunter Morgan for a discussion of Anna Akhmatova's "Requiem," a cycle of personal and political poems dealing with Stalin's reign of terror. Akhmatova's work is constructed with cinematic care, moving between scenes, time periods and points of view with film-like cuts. Cinematic qualities are embedded in the craft and construction of the poem, and are essential to its success. Many of the techniques Akhmatova used are both poetic and cinematic, and are useful examples of how cinematic devices can be used in poetry.
