Making Peace with Germany  (Conferences / Seminars / Lectures)

Lev Raphael, Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of English, MSU

The son of Holocaust survivors, Lev Raphael grew up in a traumatized household where he learned to hate and fear Germany and Germans. Later, as a much-published author, Lev's life took a completely unexpected turn when a German publisher bought three of his books for translation, but with the proviso that Lev go on tour there. Could Lev do it? Would he do it? Now, Lev has been to Germany five times, has German friends, speaks German, and would happily return. His 19th book, "My Germany," is a memoir, travelogue, and part mystery that explores ways in which Germany turned from fantasy to reality in Lev's life and career. Lev will talk about the book's strange genesis, the surprises it brought him as a writer and a Jew, and the sometimes shocking things he learned about his Holocaust survivor parents along the way.

Co-sponsored by the Department of English, James Madison College, and the Center for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies.
