Five Different Paintings-Five Different Outcomes: The Detroit Institute of Arts and Holocaust Claims  (Conferences / Seminars / Lectures)

Graham W. J. Beal, Visiting Hannah Distinguished Lecturer

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) was the first US museum to return a work of art stolen during the Holocaust to a Jewish family in 1950 and has subsequently dealt successfully with several other claims. One of these claims, however, set a precedent for other museums that has not been well received by the Holocaust community and, despite clarifications, continues to cause bad publicity for the DIA.

Co-sponsored by the Museum Studies Department, James Madison College, and the Department of Art, Art History, and Design.
